Friday song
Posted by peegee on Fri, 04/08/2005 - 6:46am.
I'll opt for some healthy escapism:

Home from work our Juliet
Clears her morning meal
She dabs her skin with pretty smells
Concealing to appeal
"I will make my bed", she says
But turned to go
Can she be late for her Cinema show ?
Cinema show ?

Romeo locks his basement flat
And scurries up the stairs
With head held high and floral tie
A weekend millionaire
"I will make my bed
With her tonight", he cries
Can he fail armed with his
Chocolate surprise ?

Take little trip back with Father Tiresias
Listen to the old one speak of all he has lived through
I have crossed between the poles, for me there's no mystery
Once a man like a sea I raged
Once a woman like the earth I gave
There is in fact more earth than sea.

Stuck in my head today:

We didn't have a lot of fun in the desert
We didn't have a lot of fun in the sand
But saddle up your cow
And fall behind us now
Because we're goin' to the Promised Land!

For years I've eaten nothing but manna
A dish that is filling, but bland
But now we're on our way
I'll have a cheese souffle
Because we're goin' to the Promised Land!

And in the Promised Land, it's gonna be so grand
We'll have our fill from the grill,
As much as we can stand
It'll be so great, oh we can hardly wait
'Cause we're goin' to the Promised Land!

The dining was lousy with Moses
But we'll be feasting with Josh in command!
I'd like a taco, please
And some pintos and cheese
Because we're goin' to the Promised Land!

And in the Promised Land, it's gonna be so grand
We'll have our fill from the grill,
As much as we can stand
It'll be so great, oh we can hardly wait
'Cause we're goin' to the Promised Land!

And in the Promised Land, it's gonna be so grand
We'll have our fill from the grill,
As much as we can stand
It'll be so great
With waffles on my plate!
'Cause we're goin' to the Promised Land!

I hear it's flowing with milk and honey
Sounds sticky!

'Cause we're goin' to the Promised Land!
Yeah, we're goin' to the Promised Land!
'Cause we're goin' to the Promised Land!

Complete tangent here - is anyone else having a problem with "view recent posts" returning pages and pages of old threads? Any idea of what can be done in such a case?

Post more?

The tracker thingy seems to like digging into the past and bringing back posts with similar dates from years ago. If nobody posts anything new it rifles through the archives to amuse itself. Can you blame it?

It seems to do that at odd intervals. Sometimes a relative recent thread, other times stuff from before I knew about IP, aka "the dark ages".

On the plus side, sometimes it digs up a real classic.

I drink good coffee every morning
Comes from a place that's far away
And when I'm done I feel like talking
Without you here there is less to say

I don't want you thinking I'm unhappy
What is closer to the truth
That if I lived till I was a hundred and two
I just don't think I'll ever get over you

I'm no longer moved to drink strong whisky
'Cause I shook the hand of time and I knew
That if I lived till I could no longer climb my stairs
I just don't think I'll ever get over you

Your face it dances and it haunts me
Your laughter's still ringing in my ears
I still find pieces of your presence here
Even, even after all these years

But I don't want you thinking that I don't get asked to dinner
'Cause I'm here to say that I sometimes do
Even though I may soon feel the touch of love
I just don't think I'll ever get over you

If I lived till I was a hundred and two
I just don't think I'll ever get over you...

Waits for what?? Ba dum bum! *G*

Take my photo off the wall
If it just won't sing for you
'Cause all that's left has gone away
And there's nothing there for you to prove

Oh, look what you've done
You've made a fool of everyone
Oh well, it seems likes such fun
Until you lose what you had won

Give me back my point of view
'Cause I just can't think for you
I can hardly hear you say
What should I do, well you choose

Oh, look what you've done
You've made a fool of everyone
Oh well, it seems likes such fun
Until you lose what you had won

Oh, look what you've done
You've made a fool of everyone
A fool of everyone
A fool of everyone

Take my photo off the wall

And there's nothing there for you to do

we NEED a holiday to celebrate any of that stuff?

i'm anti-valentine's day, but i do love being in any given store on feb. 14th. teddibly amusing to watch the entire male population (and quite a few women, come to that) scrambling for flowers and candy like it was a 1/2 price power tool sale and trying to look casual about it. interestingly, most of the "oh, shit, it's v-day!" women were in the card section.

mmm, human nature. *grin* that is, so long as i don't get any on me. ew.

So here's what I'm making for dinner tonight.
Lobster Flambe
Asparagus with garlic, lemon and olive oil
Oyster mushrooms with garlic, shallots and butter
and wild rice.

With a nice Merryvale Starmont Chardonnay. And a nice cognac to finish off the night.

Hope everyone elses day is also great.

I marinated a beef tenderloin in soy, red wine and ginger and broiled it, and made stuffed potatoes (stuffed with the innards whipped up with sour cream, chives, cheddar and bacon). I also steamed some broccoli and served it with Chimay Grand Reserve.

It was *very* well received and rewarded...

That's.... awesome. Last night I only got so far as:
tri tip roast, rubbed with a little garlic salt, a lot of garlic powder, and cayenne
white mushrooms, sliced and fried in olive oil with slices of fresh garlic
garlic mashed potatoes (is it really possible to overdo the garlic?), rough-mashed with skins left on, with butter and olive oil and a mixture of garlic powder and freshly chopped garlic.

Soo awesome.
Oh, and the usual selection of fine microbrews, headed by a bottle of Alaskan Winter Ale, seasoned with spruce tips.

May you all bask in indulgence for one night, whether your valentine is nearby, far away, or someone you haven't yet met.

I had scalloped potatoes last night. From a box. I didn't really want them, but I had milk in my refrigerator that was on the cusp of spoiling-- too strange tasting to drink but not quite curdled yet-- and I didn't want to waste it.

So yeah, drop dead you smug romantic bastards. Bah.

I'm a happily married woman, but I've always considered Valentine's Day to be a total crock. Besides the fact that I've got about as much romance in my soul as the average water buffalo, I hate how it pushes the diamond/wedding industry standard of "spend lots of money on traditional stuff or else you're a lousy significant other" and, even more than that, I hate how it depresses friends and collegues who are single or who have lost their SOs to whatever cause.

My custom tagline for emails yesterday: "Happy Hallmark Day -- kick a cupid, stomp a (non-native) rose, shove some chocolates down the garbage disposal."

On the other hand, I'm happy for everyone who does like it and did have a good Valentine's Day. To each his-or-her own!

Cheers!

I used to say that love is a pernicious illusion, foisted upon us by the husband of the woman who wrote "Frankenstein", and perpetuated by Hallmark and DeBeers.

On the other hand... sex and chocolate. Great holiday. Now we just need one that celebrates sex, beer and pizza. And maybe another that celebrates sex, scotch and steak.

That's it! I hereby declare March 21 to be Saturnalia Day! Eat, drink and have as much sex as you can manage! And June 21 shall be St. Papa John's Day! Get a keg and as much pizza as you can afford and have as much sex as you can manage!

Subject: Happy Saturnalia! (Periodic Repost)

Christmas

It is generally accepted by scholars that Christ was born in April.

The term Christmas comes from the Roman Catholic mass of Christ celebrated on December 25 originally to counter the ancient feast of Saturnia established by the ancient Romans. The holiday, which resembled both halloween and Mardi gras, was so popular that the Church could not abolish it. The Church's answer to this pagan holiday was to declare that Christ was born on December 25. The meaning of the Roman holiday was to celebrate the "rising Sun," the Church altered that a bit to mean the "rising Son."

Even so, in 18th century London (London was originally a Roman city) the peasant's Christmas eve carousing, which included public sexual activity, was again outlawed by the Christian noblemen. The holiday went underground for a century. Hard to keep a good thing down, Christmas celebration was reestablished in Protestant England only when the population began flocking to the Catholic Mass on December 25 of each year.

When the Puritans moved to America Christmas was strictly outlawed, any man caught drunk on December 25 was fined 5 pounds. Anyone exhibiting too much joy on that day was punished. After the American revolution the Congress of the US was intentionally kept in session on December 25 for over 60 years to resist this English/Roman pagan holiday.

The "yule tide" refers to the Germanic pagan ritual of hauling the largest log one could find into the "keep" in December and staying drunk while it burned, usually for about ten days. Along with that the evergreen was brought in because it was held that its powers to stay alive over Winter would give the household strength. To this custom, which became popular when Queen Victoria married her cousin, a German, the Church added hanging apples on the tree to signify the Garden of Eden. The apples evolved into assorted ornamentation.

Another German tradition was the myth that an evil demon flew through the night on a certain day in December, if this entity visited your house one of your family would die. The Dutch countered this fearful visitor with an obscure Turkish saint named St. Nicholas: instead of a demon visiting ruin on the house, this cheerful saint would visit the household bestowing presents on the frightened children. In line with this, an American Senator picked up pen in the 1800's and, designing a `Santa Claus' that resembled one of America's robber barons and railroad tycoons, though in reverse moral propensity, created the popular Saint Nick. The idea was so popular with the department stores, this gift giving, that Santa nearly immediately appeared in every major retailing establishment in America to invite children to inform their parents how to spend their money.

Happy Saturnalia.

Don't forget the fact that, until the late-19th Century, Santa Claus, at least as depicted in America, wore all green. Then Coca-Cola started using the image of a cherubic fat man to sell more soda in winter and they changed his clothes to red.

Absolutely true.

At least some of them, anyway- I liked "Pirates of the Carribean", despite its being based on a rather silly Disneyworld ride. But I suspect a lot of that is due to Johnny Depp's performance.

I also liked "Con Air", "Gone In 60 Seconds", and even "Young Doctors In Love". But he's also come out with "Coyote Ugly", "Flashdance" and "Armageddon". He's rather inconsistent in the quality of the films he makes.

But Top Gun makes up for a lot of them. I had a friend who knew the real pilots from the Top Gun School. The pilot 'Viper' (the hotshot at the school that Maverick was trying to get) actually played a bit part in the movie. He's the 'older man' that Kelly McGillis is with when Tom Cruise first meets her. Which was kinda an inside joke, as Tom Cruise is dissing the 'older man' who, IRL, is the best fighter pilot at Top Gun.
Trivia I'll bet none of you knew.

I saw Kangaroo Jack on video. My mom has a long long history of renting movies that are by far the worst things ever put on film. It's become a family joke. I didn't pay, I didn't choose, not my fault that we gagged. My dad cut up her rental membership card that very night.

Hmmm...I know that's where the first bar/restaurant scene was filmed; was it also where the last bar scene was filmed? I recall the last bar looking rather different from the first.

Geez, it's been about 15 years since I saw that movie, and yet I could probably still recite large chunks of it, thanks to my sister's phase at around age 12 of coming home from school and immediately watching it...every...single...damned...day.

They used a total of three bars, I think. The Officer's Club at Naval Air Station North Island on Coronado, the Kansas City Barbeque, and The Windsock on Pacific Highway. (The last has been demolished since Top Gun was filmed.)

In the final scene, Kelly McGillis is standing in a trench because she is taller than Cruise.

I knew about Kansas City Barbeque, but it's hard not to when you live in San Diego.

I've done some eco. restoration stuff right off the end of the runway at Miramar (Naval) Air Station, which was where the Top Gun school used to be held. Now I think it's somewhere in Nevada, and Miramar has gone to the Marines. It's a very, very LOUD site to work.

Well if you've been to San Deigo then you know about it, I was just betting that Apple hadn't been to San Deigo.
Well my obscure movie trivia that even Apple doesn't know (though I did mention it here years ago) has to do with The Graduate. What were the 3 'mistakes' (obvious errors in the movie) that you'd only know about if you were from the Bay Area? (Hint, 2 of them have to do with driving).

Apple hasn't been to San Diego. :^P I've just collected random knowledge from people who have.

Same goes for The Graduate question.

There is a scene with Dustin Hoffman going to Berkeley but his car is driving on the upper deck of Bay Bridge which only goes in the direction of San Francisco.

In another scene, he's driving from Los Angeles to Berkeley in a hurry, and crosses the bridge again (in the wrong direction). But the most direct route from L.A. to Berkeley doesn't require you to cross the Bay Bridge in EITHER direction.

At yet another point Dustin Hoffman is in a cafe on Telegraph Avenue drinking a beer. At the time the film was made, no restaurant within a mile of campus was allowed to serve alcoholic beverages.

I will admit to asking my dad for that last one, but I didn't Google for it. :^P Gotta love a loophole! *G*

P.S. I was here a few years ago, you know.

Errors
Posted by ParU on Sun, 02/20/2005 - 11:05am.
Well you found one of the ones I knew about. The other driving one is that he's racing to Santa Barbara from Berkeley (end of the movie) and he drives through the tunnel at Gaviota. But the tunnel is only in the Northbound Direction (he was supposed to be heading south). He drove through it the right way (unlike the bridge) it was just the wrong way for the story.
The third one is really obscure. Dustin is waiting for Elaine at Sproul Plaza and the clock tower rings and she comes out of Sproul Hall (along with a bunch of other students) like they just got out of class. But Sproul Hall (the one she comes out of) is an Administration Building (no classrooms) and has always been one.
So There!

Normally I'd agree, but Jerry was a producer on Top Gun. Goose's death was pretty sad.

...Or did the guy mean an *entire* half of the film? 'Cause that'd be pretty hard for anyone to do, cry through an hour or more of film.

I cried a little, inside, when I was watching "Pirates of the Caribbean and said to myself early on, "Hey, Johnny Depp plays a pretty good drunk," only to have that very fact TOLD to the audience near the end, like it was some kind of revelation. Argh.
