hah! ParU right? Never! and the poli thread does work, at least it does for me.
But, but, KRIS....

it's more fun this way! *big grin*

i was juuuuuust about to say that, joe. but then i realized that this particular thread is about california politics specifically, which is a horse of an entirely different color who commands far greater fees for personal appearances. it gets its own space, i guess.

just don't get me started on the groping fiasco. i mean... what the... it's... gah. just don't get me started. heh. (no, even though tim is running around with the petition to get as many of us female types as possible to say "grope". uh-huh. we SEE you over there, you know.)

Where do I sign?

I have a favor to ask of you--if you're replying to a specific comment, can you please hit "reply to this comment" instead of "Add new comment"? Makes things less confusing for those of us that aren't on that setting. Or at least for me.
(and yes, I know some of you are doing this already, and I thank you.)
That is all.
Bias...

Actually hypo - we all are a product of our bias, but I, at least, admit it.

And of course I'm right and you're wrong - what was it we were talking about anyway?
Political Rantings
Posted by Joe Napalm on Sat, 10/11/2003 - 12:26am.
Oh, I see how this works... ...it's when I start getting political that everything gets shunted off to the so-called "Political Thread". Sure, go ahead and oppress the helpless Efreeti, just cause he's a minority. "Come see the violence inherent in the system! Help! Help! I'm being repressed!" Anyway. I don't feel up to commenting on the bread and circuses, anyway. What's the use in always being right when bullheaded mortals never listen, anyway? Now I know why that chick at Delphi was always so glum... Right. Anyway. What's the big deal about 5am? It's a fine time of day...if only the birds weren't so @#$%ing cheerful about it. -Jn- Efreeti Sophist

Shunt up
Posted by Jon on Sat, 10/11/2003 - 3:34pm.
Actually, Joe, no-one is being shunted to the PoliThread any longer, as its massive size is a bit of an impediment to the current system. So I'll shunt you to the thread where that was discussed... ;-)

'Sides, that chick at Delphi was glum because she was hopped up on toxic gasses.

pu biased? Say it ain't so!

But politicians do whatever it takes to stay in power. Commie, Republican, Democrat, PRI, et al. It doesn't matter they just want that power.

I was just telling Saint what I'd read (in several places) about Arnold's alleged interview. I never heard it wasn't true, I only heard he said he "didn't remember" saying it. Sorry if I touched a nerve! Funny, but I hear much more about Republicans' dirty tricks than about Democrats', starting way back in the Watergate era. Anyway, I hope for the sake of everyone in Cali that he turns out to be a good governor. I never once said he shouldn't be running, or that he would be a bad choice. I have no real opinion about that. I've always liked his movies, and have long been aware that he's a moderate. But local politics in states I don't live in aren't really that interesting to me.
Rampant Recalls on the way
Posted by Social Neanderthal on Thu, 10/09/2003 - 11:17am.
You just know the dems are looking at the recall rules all over the country. It's just a matter of time til they find a likely target and really get the circus started.

The only thing we know for sure is the next one will be even messier than the circus in California.

Not that is wasn't entertaining and all that, I'm just afraid the next one will be in Texas. If it happens here I hope it's just as easy to get on the ballot, cause if it is I'm running for office!!

Posted by Matt on Thu, 10/09/2003 - 2:29pm.
I can't believe this recall thing is/was national news. I mean, so what? So the voting population recalled an elected official. It's happened before. Hell, this is the second actor California has elected governor in 50 years. Frankly, I'm glad Arnold's governor, if the recall had to pass. Now maybe he'll start to understand what a crap hole he's put himself in and what a hard goddamn job it really is.

He'll probably just end up being a puppet politican like Reagan (mostly) was anyway. Not much harm done, in that case.
I can't imagine the Kennedys are too happy about this whole thing.

OTOH
Posted by Sewicked on Fri, 10/10/2003 - 5:24am.
There's no chance for Ahnold to become president (unlike Ronnie).

Yet.
Posted by Matt on Fri, 10/10/2003 - 11:11am.
Senator Orin Hatch (R-Utah) is said to be introducing a Constitutional Amendment whereby anyone who has been a citizen of the US for 20 years can be president.

So even though it's unlikely in the extreme, it's still possible, if all the pieces fall into place.

Posted by Saint on Fri, 10/10/2003 - 11:22am.
Compared to the Christian fundies, big-business toadies, and career politicos who generally run, I don't think Schwarzenegger would be a horrible possibility for president. Let's see how he does as governor before assuming the world would end if he got elected. That said, I really don't think Hatch's amendment will pass. Do you seriously think 3/4 of Congress will think it's a good idea to widen the playing field (especially considering that several of them have presidential ambitions of their own)?

Deja vu all over again
Posted by marinerd on Fri, 10/10/2003 - 11:22am.
Didn't we recently discuss this foreigners-for-president thing? I personally wouldn't want anyone who admired Hitler for any reason to ever have a chance to be the president.

But I always liked his movies (stuff blowing up).

?
Posted by Saint on Fri, 10/10/2003 - 11:23am.
I must have missed the press-release professing his admiration for Hitler.

Arnold and Adolf
Posted by ParU on Fri, 10/10/2003 - 11:32am.
Well the 'Hitler' thing was a typical Davis 'dirty smear'. Supposedly he said that Hitler was an effective public speaker, but the person who supposedly heard it denies it and there's no proof. It is known that his father was a Nazi and I believe he spent a whole lot of money investigating him. Less important than his family history (IMHO) is what he DOES.

So he gave a whole bunch of money to the Simon Wisenthal Center in Austria (long before he was a politician) and he's a major supporter of the synagogue in Graz, Austria (the city near his village). Interviews with the Jewish community there show their 100% support for him.

So how many of the people critizing Arnold for this made up story have done ANYTHING to fight Anti-Semitism? He gave his time and money before he ever considered running for office. Name me one politican who's given time and/or money to a group that he wasn't going to take political credit for?

Heil
Posted by marinerd on Fri, 10/10/2003 - 11:30am.
It was several years ago in an interview. Paraphrasing here, he said he admired him for starting from nothing and gaining such power. The disturbing part for me was when Arnold said he would love to have something like that, where masses of people were cheering and adoring him, no matter what he was saying. Creepy.

And that's not even touching on the groping issue.

I'm not one who expects politicians to be perfect--they are human. But I don't like them to be creepy or to sound so unbalanced.

Okay
Posted by Saint on Fri, 10/10/2003 - 11:43am.
I simply wondered, as I'd never heard anything of the sort. And frankly, if he really said that, I'm surprised his career didn't go in the toilet (worse than it already has in the last five years or so).

Arnold and Groping
Posted by ParU on Fri, 10/10/2003 - 11:39am.
Well marinerd - I certainly understand your feelings on the groping issue. But the 'interview' with Arnold never happened (or that part was never published). Prove me wrong - reference the exact words.
On the 'groping' thing I wonder how much of that was publicity seeking? Not that it probably didn't happen, but it certainly was never brought up at the time. And the Director of 'Twins' refuted the allegations about the atmosphere on the set. All in all it was a typical Democrat 'dirty trick' (sorry, but that's the way I see it). Bring up sexual allegations at the last minute. The interesting thing here was that it was orchestrated by the LA Times. The bias of the press against Arnold and actually against all 'outsiders' of the political process is pretty amazing.

Your bias is showing

Democrats aren't the only ones who try to pull that crap, Unit.

Big IF
Posted by Sewicked on Fri, 10/10/2003 - 11:33am.
If you only look at what Hitler accomplished economically for Germany, he looks admirable. But frankly, I can only do that in certain ultra-intellectual, emotionally detached moods. Then the rest of what he did crashes in on me & I want to travel back in time & shoot him (& Goering et al).

Posted by Matt on Fri, 10/10/2003 - 3:05pm.
Oh, I don't know. I think being in a ditch, covered in gasoline and on fire on your honeymoon is a pretty fitting end.
And ParU, be careful with your choice of words. In this particular instance, it may have been a Democratic "dirty trick," but that's just one instance. Republicans and any other politician who spends enough time in a position of power will do the same thing.

Dirty trick
Posted by ParU on Fri, 10/10/2003 - 11:29pm.
Oh you're right hypo. I was speaking of the 'Democrat' dirty trick cause Davis was famous for them. But in reality you are correct. It's a politician dirty trick, regardless of political party. Which makes you wonder why any sane person would want to subject themselves and their family to that sort of activity. Of course this particular 'dirty trick' was orchestrated by the largest news organization in California (the LA Times). So how come there's not more outrage at them?
I know that one of the most honorable people I know of, refused to run for Vice Pres. cause his wife didn't want to subject their family to it. So he's serving as Secty. of State instead. I'd vote for him in a heartbeat.

Ya caught me, Hazel. I borrow indiscreetly and shamelessly from Eddie Izzard at every opportunity.

BTW, my mom got third-row tickets to his Sexie show in Portland, OR and he was wearing two sets of falsies. One set on his eyelashes, the other set on his chest. I won't go into the jokes, for those of you who have tickets to a future show.
Easy recall?
Posted by hypoxic on Wed, 10/08/2003 - 5:08pm.
umm no. Remember the recall did not pick up steam until Issa got involved and started to pay paid signature gatherers to go out there. And we're going to start the pandering thing again? Hell I want to bring up halliburton and bechtal and fluor! Now that is pandering.

Fluor
Posted by Matt on Wed, 10/08/2003 - 11:12pm.
Fluor's really gotten big, hasn't it? Bob Fluor (the president, I think)'s son and I were in Boy Scouts together. Interesting guy, Bob was. Dangerously tan year-round and drove a different exotic sports car every year. Had seven kids, five of them girls. Or was it five kids, three of them girls?

Anyway, Bob was kind of a jerk and his son Doug was downing 6-8 Ritalin a day for his hyperactivity. We didn't have ADD yet.
I wonder how many recalls we'll end up having
Posted by hypoxic on Wed, 10/08/2003 - 9:27am.
I wonder if some rich demo is going to fund a recall drive.

Recall
Posted by ParU on Wed, 10/08/2003 - 3:14pm.
Well hypo - the reason the first recall was so 'easy' was that only 8 million people voted in the last Gubernatorial election. A lot more voted in this one. And the 'recall' standard is a percentage of the voters in the last election.

Note that Gray Davis kept saying that 8 million voters affirmed his right to office. And he lied. He got 3.5 million votes (the largest amount) but it was 8 million voters TOTAL in the election. Plus Cruz and he just totally pandered to anyone who'd give them money (hey can you say Indian Casinos and Oracle?).

Total Recall
Posted by Jon on Wed, 10/08/2003 - 12:34pm.
The real recall will be when MeChA (or however they capitalize random letters) posts a referendum for California to become part of Mexico again. They've already got a Lieutenant Governor working for them, it's just a matter of time...
