Well I think that you should get extra 'geek' points (or maybe a Loonie pt) if you know what 'grok' and 'grep' mean and the difference between them.

brian28306 - sorry 'bout that - here's your belated froot bat, he comes with his very own NASCAR and 'Fritz' helmet.

Don't worry, Inuki...I scored higher than you, so you're not the geekiest person here. A friend of mine sent me this test awhile ago, and I scored a 57.79093% - Extreme Geek. So, I edged you out a by just a bit...you can hide behind me when the Geek Patrol comes knocking.

Mycroft claims he scored lower than me, but only because he's such a geek that he nitpicked himself a lower score. *rolls eyes*

And this guy in the quote is a "whoosie", as ParU calls em. As Yamamoto said, your resolve should be such that - even if your head were to suddenly be lopped off - you would be able to complete one final action with certainty. None of these froofy "I'd kill you if I weren't tied up with a gun to my head" excuses...I mean, pahleeze...show a little intestinal fortitude.

Translation for the Bushido-impared: "Do or do not...there is no 'try'." Most of you scored high enough on the Geek test to grok that, at least. *Grin*

Anyway...I'm on dial up. Lemme alone.

Since I don't don't have a frootbat, I thought I try giving the cool point to the dog. Bad IDEA! Charlotte has bounced all over the house, swallowed a raquetball, went through a storm door, took down 12 ft of fence and now huddled in the corner by the fireplace twitching. I'm pretty sure I'm not going near her, I like my arms. I think I'll send in the boy, I remember how to make another one of him.

There should be disclaimers on cool pts.

But I gotta give a cool pt. to brian28306 cause that's sorta the thing my daughter's said before about UNIX. And since he doesn't know her, it's pretty cool.

And Igirly and steff - I guess I'm intimated by both of you. Igirly for her wit and literary knowledge and all around 'Intelliness' and steff for, you know...

ummm...ParU, darling? I'm so very NOT frightened by Steff. Please. A) not male, whip has no authority over me. B) Dude, she's my sister. I can SO take her.

I'm not insulting her. And I wasn't really referring to social ineptitude. I read the nerd as "loners" not "social outcasts". Ergo, Steff's a very much nerd, while I usually prefer nerdiness with occasional breaks for socializing with the select few.

But neither of us is truly socially inept. We can charm the pants off most anyone. And sometimes do, just for the fun.

Pardon the mini-rantishness of this. Nothing intended. *gentle smile*

Well 0.5 cool pts. to Paul for that clever (though well worn) pun.

And I think the reason I placed so (relatively) low on that geek test is that role-playing games came out only after I was 'all growed up'.

Still I think that Igirly would only dare insult (compliment?) her sis, cause she knows she's no longer around. Cause steff's still got that whip.

Hey, if social ineptitude is the issue I am a major nerd too. Plus I know about being considered a commodity because I supposedly can "fix computers" which often involves telling people that they got the wrong type of cable or yanking jammed paper out of other people's printers.

I have a behavioural-psych friend who claims that the nerd/geek thing is a socialization issue: that geeks are the ones who are more gregarious (albeit usually just with other geeks), whereas nerds tend to be loners. Don't know whether she was just making that up or what, but it makes sense as a distinction.

Hangs head I used to be one of those rabid debaters about Mac/PC. Nowadays I'm more sanguine about that sort of thing. Some things work better for one person, some things don't.

I thought that programmers debated about vi and emacs... at least, that's what the programmers on IP have mentioned.

I'm kind of surprised how high I rated on the geek test. Roleplaying adds a bit, I suppose, but my computer geekiness is pretty low. *shrug*

Good for you Cebu! And yeah Igirly, that's usually the way the geeks/nerds do their debates. Course it's funny as real computer nerds use UNIX and thus don't really care about the Mac/PC bit too much, but durn few college folks even know what UNIX is. (Or TECO, or TSO or what a Cray is or what JCL was). Course I learned from Hollerith, so I'm dating myself a bit here.

I'm 16.76529% which apparently means I'm a geek. You know why? Because I read and I like learning. That's it. I checked hardly any computer questions or math questions. I believe that would make me well-read and intelligent, rather than a geek. Or, say, a nerd, rather than a geek. I think, in my geeks are more technically and numerically oriented, while nerds are the ones who know a lot and breeze through homework. Perhaps that's just me.

I'm proud of being intelligent, dang it!!

Try being in college and being labelled "the one who's good with computers"...I constantly have to sort out problems that my friends or suitemates are having. Last year I had to trek all the way across campus every time my one friend wanted to upload a picture.

And honestly, I'm not even really all that good with computers. I just have this amazing ability to read directions, follow them, and retain what they say.

Taragirl, I'm on the opposite end of that all the time. If I got paid a dollar for every minute of tech support I've done for friends, family, and coworkers, I'd be a wealthy man.

Example:
*phone rings* "Hello? Oookay, and when did you do this? Okay, then there's still a chance you can get it back. Go to the Recycle Bin. Yeah, it says, 'Norton Protected Recycle Bin.' No, don't double-click on it. Yeah, all that junk you're seeing won't help you. Cancel that. Now right-click once. You see the option that says 'Explore'? Click that. Yeah, left-click. Okay, you see the files you accidentally deleted? Good. Now select those by dragging the mouse. Now go up to where it says File and choose Restore. That'll put them back on the Desktop."

True story.
