I have a behavioural-psych friend who claims that the nerd/geek thing is a socialization issue: that geeks are the ones who are more gregarious (albeit usually just with other geeks), whereas nerds tend to be loners. Don't know whether she was just making that up or what, but it makes sense as a distinction.
