Under a rock

"y'member that time they bombed that... oh, that place in new york, y'know? 9-11?"

"yeah. do YOU?"

- two old men, talking (i believe) about gas prices.

scare. ee. i was gratified, however, that as i was frozen in the "hold my breath and stand very still with my eyes bugged out incredulously" stance, his friend jumped in with the sarcasm. heh.

When I get old, I'm afraid I'm going to be that first guy. You know, where you actually do know what you're talking about, but you've somehow forgotten the right word, so everyone else just stands around looking expectant while you try to jog your own memory... Sadly, I do that quite often already.

well, to clarify, i'd been subjected to their conversation for some time, and in my unprofessional opinion, they both sounded perfectly lucid. part of why this was so odd.

I didn't think the guy was senile, exactly. I really do have that problem myself, and I'm yet a touch young to be losing my mind.

As an example, talking to my wife the other day: "Hey, babe, you want to pick up some food and head over to the...the...um...oh, god, you know, has a bunch of trees, some benches, sidewalks--the park! Do you want to grab some food and go eat at the park?"

It's distressing, because I know exactly what I'm talking about, but I can't drag the right word out of my word with a chainfall. And it seems to be getting worse as time goes on.

Hence the worry that I'll end up in the nursing home, telling the attendent, "I want to go watch...uh, hell, you know, the box, with the pictures in it..."

I do that all the time. It drives me nuts. I'm a terrible conversationalist for many reasons, but partly because I forget half the words I want to use. der.

Neil Gaiman has a phrase for that. He calls it "triangulating for the word." Which makes perfect sense - you spit out a bunch of things that have to do with the concept you're trying to get across, and the intersection of all those things is the word you're looking for.

I do it sometimes, but mostly I just like his phrasing.

Is there nothing better than listening to two old people bicker?

YMMV, of course.
