Neil Gaiman has a phrase for that. He calls it "triangulating for the word." Which makes perfect sense - you spit out a bunch of things that have to do with the concept you're trying to get across, and the intersection of all those things is the word you're looking for.

I do it sometimes, but mostly I just like his phrasing.
