In Passing's in the news again! I did an email interview with a reporter from the Daily Cal, and the site got a mention in his article about weblogs in Berkeley. Check it out here.

And for those of you interested in checking out other weblogs in Berkeley, I recommend Berkeley Blogs, which is probably the most comprehensive list out there.

For some reason, this is running through my head right now...

Remember when you were young, you shone like the sun
Shine on you crazy diamond
Now there's a look in your eyes, like black holes in the sky
Shine on you crazy diamond
You were caught in the cross-fire of childhood and
stardom, blown on the steel breeze
Come on you target for far away laughter, come on you
stranger, you legend, you martyr, and shine!
You reached for the secret too soon,
you cried for the moon
Shine on you crazy diamond
Threatened by shadows at night, and exposed to the light
Shine on you crazy diamond
Well you wore out your welcome with random precision
Rode on the steel breeze
Come on you raver, you seer of visions, come on you
painter, you piper, you prisoner, and shine!

There's a little black spot on the sun today
That's my soul up there
It's the same old thing as yesterday
That's my soul up there
There's a black hat caught in a high tree top
That's my soul up there
There's a flag pole rag and the wind won't stop
That's my soul up there

I have stood here before in the pouring rain
With the world turning circles running 'round my brain
I guess I'm always hoping that you'll end this reign
But it's my destiny to be the king of pain

There's a fossil that's trapped in a high cliff wall
There's a dead salmon frozen in a waterfall
There's a blue whale beached by a springtide's ebb
There's a butterfly trapped in a spider's web

There's a king on a throne with his eyes torn out
There's a blind man looking for a shadow of doubt
There's a rich man sleeping on a golden bed
There's a skeleton choking on a crust of bread

There's a red fox torn by a huntsman's pack
There's a black winged gull with a broken back
There's a little black spot on the sun today
It's the same old thing as yesterday

I have stood here before in the pouring rain
With the world turning circles running 'round my brain
I guess I always thought you could end this reign
But it's my destiny to be the king of pain......

I'll always be king of pain..............

I was looking for one of the most unabashedly romantic songs I've heard, but this one decided to be the one I posted instead. Harrod and Funck, "Ashes". Enjoy.

I'm an expert in nothing except train wrecks and soulmates,
And fine lines and crap shoots and hurricane fate.
A celebration of clutter, I cannot deny it, from ashes...

Well I never fell in love, but I stepped in it twice.
I look for shifting planets on the day she arrives.
Playing king of the hill, skipping stones in the desert, from dust to dust...

If you build a bonfire, watch me drink and dance in the moonlight,
I'll feel the heat from your wedding ring.
Sweet relief underneath my crumpled skin.

So you're an expert in everything from embryos to empires.
Well lately I'm as dark as a polar night.
Everything I hope seems to crumble around me, from ashes to ashes...

If you build a bonfire, watch me drink and dance in the moonlight,
I'll feel the heat from your wedding ring.
Sweet relief underneath my crumpled skin.

If you see me, you'll know me by tired eyes.
And though I've forsaken you, it's dust to dust...

If you build a bonfire, watch me drink and dance in the moonlight,
I'll feel the heat slip from your wedding ring as it drops in the bonfire.
I'll be thirsty and crippled in the moonlight.
I'll burn my hand on your wedding ring.
Sweet relief underneath my crumpled skin.

Friday song, cause this week's theme seems to be "melancholy" again.

Remember when the days were long
And rolled beneath a deep blue sky
Didn't have a care in the world
With mommy and daddy standing by
But happily ever after fails
And we've been poisoned by these fairy tales
The lawyers dwell on small details
Since daddy had to fly

But I know a place where we can go
That's still untouched by men
We'll sit and watch the clouds roll by
And the tall grass wave in the wind
You can lay your head back on the ground
And let your hair fall all around me
Offer up your best defense
But this is the end
This is the end of the innocence

Oh beautiful for spacious skies
But now those skies are threatening
They're beating plowshares into swords
For this tired old man that we elected king
Armchair warriors often fail
And we've been poisoned by these fairy tales
The lawyers clean up all details
Since daddy had to lie

But I know a place where we can go
And wash away this sin
We'll sit and watch the clouds roll by
And the tall grass wave in the wind
Just lay your head back on the ground
And let your hair spill all around me
Offer up your best defense
But this is the end
This is the end of the innocence

Who knows how long this will last
Now we've come so far so fast
But somewhere back there in the dust
That same small town in each of us
I need to remember this
So baby give me just one kiss
And let me take a long last look
Before we say goodbye

Just lay your head back on the ground
And let your hair fall all around me
Offer up your best defense
But this is the end
This is the end of the innocence

Beautiful, simple lyrics.
They struck something in me the first time I heard them.
I had never heard the Johnny Cash version before I learnt it in a band I was in.
We played it almost Celtic and sang country-like harmonies.
When I heard the recorded version it was maudlin and almost cheesy.
Very slow.
But those lyrics have stuck with me for 20 odd years it's still my favorite Johnny Cash song.

Friday song:

I Still Miss Someone - Johnny Cash

At my door the leaves are falling
A cold wild wind has come
Sweethearts walk by together
And I still miss someone

I go out on a party
And try and find a little fun
But all I find's a darkened corner
because I still miss someone

Oh, no I never got over those blues eyes
I see them every where
I miss those arms that held me
When all the love was there

I wonder if she's sorry
For leavin' what we'd begun
I Know there's someone for me somewhere
And I still miss someone

Thanks Johnny

D'oh! Of course you're right, Kris, I'd forgotten that. That also explains why the comments' dates are so far apart in those early posts. It makes me wonder where some of those early commenters are, though some are still here many have vanished.

I seem to recall that, for the first...months? year? of inpassing, there wasn't a comment system at all, which could explain why there are so few comments waaaayyyy back when.
But this place has DEFINATELY grown, I'm not diminishing that.

I was thinking more along the lines of that tree falling in the forest with no one to hear it --

If you get an FP and no one reads it, does it actually exist?

I guess you could get a FP that way, but if you did, I'd have to quote a classic:
"The thrill is gone...
The thrill is gone, baby..."

Off topic (if there still is one), I was hideously bored yesterday and was looking back over the IP archives. I remembered many of the quotes from even before I started posting, but what I didn't remember was how few comments there were for the first year or so! It was common to have just 2 or 3, and it seemed 10 was about average. Now we routinely get past 100.

Of course, the two threads over 1,000 stand out (the Dream thread and the Political thread). But I also noticed a couple that had 0 comments, so you FP wannabees can go back and get one finally, though probably no one will notice!

What I wanted to say, in my long-winded way, is congratulations, Eve, on how your IP "baby" has grown and prospered. It really has come a long way. I hope you keep it up for as long as possible--it's still as entertaining as it can be. Thanks!

basically, during the campaign to be berkeley mayor, the daily cal put its support behind incumbent mayor shirley dean. tom bates didn't seem to like that, so he took a bunch of them from a newsstand and trashed them. that was the theft, and the rest is history...or something like that.

For anyone confused, let me direct you here: Google: berkeley mayor tom bates steal daily cal. I haven't checked too closely to see how useful those search results are, but that should give you enough pointers to at least get the gist of the story.

And ParU, I agree with George Carlin when he said "Let's not have a double standard, one standard will do just fine." :)

ok. I live down on the peninsula so I don't get much of the east bay news so I wasn't to sure what had happened to him. But if he got off lightly (exactly how was he punished) then I don't think that was right.

Anyhow was it moral? Maybe he really needed to be mayor so he could feed his kids :) I mean who got hurt? It's just a free paper and now the paper got regional coverage. So isn't any press good press? I couldn't help it and it did seem pertinent to the variable morals discussion. Just playing with you ParU. :)

Archived comment by ParU:
hypo - the punishment was pretty trivial and was far, far lighter than any conservative woulda gotten but more importantly was the fact that there were darn few (if any) 'progressive' voices that criticized him, they were all apologetic. If, say, 'W' had silenced a free press there woulda been burnings in effigy but, IMHO, a number of persons apply a double-standard when it comes to 'liberals' who suppress speech that they don't like.

Of course if you're a Democrat/Liberal Mayor you can get away with stealing and destroying thousands of copies of a newspaper (The Daily Cal) and not get vilified for it. But if it had been a Republican who did it, they would've burned him (literally) at the stake.

Ain't it interesting how free speech works?
