Latest news is that Misty Lackey's next Elemental Masters book will be delayed a year. Bad news for my fans, but not for hers. Her contract with DAW Books calls for a Valdemar book every fall, and something else every spring. She did a short story for a DAW dragon anthology which turned out so well she is doing a novel in that universe (which resembles the video game JOUST) for this coming spring.

In the meantime, she also has a short story in the upcoming anthology Ring of Fire (stories which take place in the world of Eric Flint's 1632) from Baen, and another SERRAted Edge book planned. Namelink offers free samples of her work; peel back the URL for more authors

Jethro Tull...Skating away ( on the thin ice of a new day)
or even
Yoko Ono...Walking on thin ice ( covered and made more palatable by Elvis Costello)
Yes that is my age showing disguised as an eclectic mind

Referencing sluggy's first post here, I present Pink Floyd's "The Thin Ice" (from The Wall):

Momma loves her baby,
And Daddy loves you, too.
And the sea may look warm to ya, Babe,
And the sky may look blue.
Oooooo Babe.
Oooooooo Baby Blue.
Oooooo Ooohh Babe.
If you should go skating,
On the thin ice of modern life,
Dragging behind you the silent reproach,
Of a million tear-stained eyes,
Don't be surprised when a crack in the ice,
Appears under your feet.
You slip out of your depth and out of your mind,
With your fear flowing out from behind,
You as you claw the ice...

Perhaps thin ice signals the beginning of fishing season for this guy. That could be a very happy and exciting time for him.

Still? How about next year? In April 2003, Misty Lackey's next 'fairy tale' book will be coming out, "Phoenix and Ashes", which will be a retelling of Cinderella. When you read it, watch out for a passing reference to the Prince's flight mechanic. That's me.

Mercedes Lackey has about a half-dozen (make that 11, I just counted) tapes/cd's of filk music set in & about her books. I have about 4 or 5 of them. I also have at least one that is currently out of print.

There's a dirty joke I could make about pleasures and thin ice here, but I really can't think of one.

It was so cold here on Saturday that I was getting the good old brain freeze just from the wind and the temperature. It sucked...

Not unlike the childhood pleasure of licking the metal swingset at 10 degrees F.

Hey, at least there's some modicum of pleasure involved-- unlike "freezerburn," an effect of winter weather that completely sucks, on ice and everywhere else.

I can't honestly think of a time when walking on thin ice wouldn't be a brief pleasure (either physically or metaphorically speaking).

Physically: The whole point of thin ice is that if you walk on it, it will break, and you will fall through. It doesn't take long for the ice to break.

Metaphorically: As a kid, I would be misbehavin', and Mom would say: "You are walking on thin ice little boy!". Sure enough, not long after, I'd push it a little too far. (*Shudder* I remember the punishments. Oh the horror! NO dinner, NO tv, NO bedtime story -- it was Hell!)

So, the pleasure could only ever be brief...

I always just assumed it was when you see little pools of water with ice frozen just at the surface, like at the side of a sidewalk or something. It's so satisfying to alter course and break them... it's like popping bubble wrap. Yae, it somehow fulfills a vast emptiness in human existence

Walking on thin ice could be (speculation) doing something very courageous:

ie, it gives them brief pleasure.

At least he didn't fall through the ice, get exposed to Kryptonite, and develop the power to absorb heat from people.

An actual plot from the "Smallville" series. Though I like the show, sometimes I think that the plots are thought up by 4-year-olds. "And then, his arm gets stuck in a bank, and then, he gets a tattoo, and then..."(part of another episode's plot)

Friend of mine once dated a guy who, through a long series of really stupid moves, managed to fall through the ice. He told her the story, then asked her not to tell anyone. She laughed in his face and said she'd be broadcasting the story to everyone she knew, and he deserved it for being such an idiot.

They broke up soon after, but I don't know if there was a connection.
