"Wow, must be an emergency."
"Really, do you think? Because six fire engines, some cop cars and an ambulance, really, that could be them getting lunch or something."
--Two women (one a wee bit sarcastic,) near a bus stop on College Ave

Some of the best ice cream I ever had was in Okinawa, Japan. I was just bowled over by the fact they had ice cream and soda vending machines on the sidewalks all over town! It was a riot. The ice cream was awesome, probably made more so just by the novelty of it I'm sure.

We have frozen custard here in Salt lake City too. There is ALWAYS a line out the door, even in the dead of winter.

I can still taste the gelato I had a year and a half ago in Florence...it was better than anything I've ever eaten before. My mother and I found some tiny little place that prefers to serve several flavors at a time, so I had strawberry, banana, and apple. Wow.

We also had really good ice cream in Provence, France, in another tiny little out-of-the-way place. I had apricot and apple--you haven't lived till you've had apple ice cream (or gelato). It's unbelieveable...I just wish I could find it here.

My boyfriend said one indicator that we had moved to a better neighborhood was that he could no longer distinguish fire engine, police or ambulance by sound.

In Raleigh, NC the State University is just down the road & across the railroad tracks from a prison. Now tell me that isn't a country song just waiting to happen.

As a self-confessed gelato snob: you'll only get the real deal in Italy. Especially Sorrento.

Speaking of fire engines and ambulences.... this morning I saw one of each going the wrong way down a one way street in front of my dorm... I didn't know they could do that (and isn't it a bit dangerous, even if they are big and loud and red?)

And I'm with the second woman, if you say somethign obvious, you'll most likely get a snide or sarcastic remark in return

Karin...
good news!
There is excellent custard in MN.
The place is called CULVERS.
There are 2 in Prior Lake area, 1 in Burnsville and 1 in Stillwater that I know of....
The chocolate frozen custard is amazing - especially if you've just lost your ass at the casino and need some cheering up.

Custard! I've never heard of frozen custard. Maybe they don't have it here. I've lived in California my whole life. We do have dippin' dots though.

Matt--That used to be one of my favorite books! And now I'm hungry again...

Anyway...yes, custard is wonderful. I found a great custard stand in Long Beach Island (NJ) over the summer, and I can't wait to get back there. Their chocolate custard was sooo good.

2. Missouri State Hospital for the criminally Insane
3. The Fulton Ghetto.

It's not just since September, ever since I came to Berkeley I've been astounded by the insane frequency of distant sirens and blaring fire truck horns.

What continent is the Custard Desert on? Personally, I prefer to eat custard as a dessert rather than see it form into all kinds of weird dune-like shapes. Too many flashbacks to The Land of Chewandswallow (namelink).

Custard and ice cream aren't the same thing.
Ice cream has qualities ranging from inedible to nearly divine, while frozen custard is nearly always excellent. I don't even know where one can get frozen custard in the Berkeley area. Frozen yogurt, yes. Custard, no. My all-time favorite ice cream is probably Ben & Jerry's Vanilla.

Well, in my current dorm, my window looks out over one of the main thoroughfares through town, and one of the major intersections is not very far down, as well as the hospital being on the same street on the other side of said intersection and down aways, so we hear sirens all the time. In fact, I almost tune them out now.

When I worked at the resturant, the fire department used to call in orders for custard (that would be ice cream for anyone who is unenlightened) and come pick them up in either the ambulence or a fire truck. Only one at a time, but I know a couple of times they were en route to get it and got called to the scene of an acciedent. Very nice guys.

Also, I don't know if anyone else experiences this, but I hear sirens on campus at least twice daily, but I only actually have seen anything twice I think since September.

Radio: "All units, all units we have a 382838 at first and main"
Rookie: "What's a 382838, Bob"
Veteran Cop: "Cute chick passed out on side of road. We're not far from there, we might get to be first on the scene for CPR"
Rookie (turning car around): Oh oh! Can I do mouth-to-mouth?"
Veteran Cop: "Not if I get there first!" (turns on lights and sirens)

Gotta love buddy cop movies.
