"They say if you can count all the bad things that happened to you on your fingers, that ain't doing half too bad."
"I was shot at twice, but it was on the same route, does that count as one or two?"
--A passenger and a bus driver
I am still in the depths of my two weeks of drowning in school, though the end is wavering in sight, above. The organization I work for is still falling apart. America is still bombing Afganistan. The economy is still going downhill.

But I'm ok.

I don't know what it is. Could be that I saw a really nice sunrise before going to bed this morning. Could be that I got a lab, a homework, and a mini-project done in 48 hours (take that, CS department.) Could be that "Buffy -- the Musical" last night was brilliant and beautiful and funny as hell. Could be that a friend I look up to told me I was a good writer. It could also be that I get to take a study break and play with OS X tonight. It could even be that I heard Kirkwood is getting snow already and snowboarding season is so close that I can almost feel the cold and the whoosh.

But whatever the cause is, I am overwhelmed with the feeling that everything is going to be ok. More good things have happened in the past 24 hours than I can count on both hands. And that ain't doin' half too bad.

Thanks for all the support.

Ben, I can do two better. My aunt & uncle _live_ in Jacksonville & my stepgranddad's last station before he retired was Camp LeJeune. When I was young (single digit age) & my grandmother would take me shopping at the PX on base I would salute the guards at the entrance. My grandmother thought it was cute.

Yes, there is a Marine Base in Jacksonville. Believe it or not, my dad works there - as a civilian.

I have heard this, but do not have 1st hand verification.

Jacksonville, NC is located near a large Marine base (this I do know for sure & certain). At one point, during the Vietnam conflict, they had a problem with the city buses. They never ran on time in the evening. The solution, station MP's with shotguns in the back of the bus. The reason the buses were running off schedule? Marines, with their sidearms on because they could be called at any time, would go into town & get drunk. Well of course they weren't going to drink & drive, so they'd catch a bus, any bus, & tell the driver where they wanted to be let off, emphasizing their point with their sidearm.

Do I really need to add any commentary to this?

It just occurred to me while rereading this..
if you get your hand caught in a blender and it lops off several of your fingers, the principle described above gets a new twist.
But then again, losing fingers *is* a pretty bad thing.

Inferno and Plan9 are two very interesting operating systems which are not Unices, tho they were written by the same people who wrote Unix.

Oh, and Jon, what "technical issues" are you referring to? Transmission problems, end being cut off, what?

Is that being replayed on UPN?

And with the namelink, which of the stuff is the songs from last week? I'm looking and not seeing them....

Archived comment by Jon:
I've just read that the full version, without technical issues, will replay on Friday at 8(apologies to umrguy for this message, in the face of your UPN disconnect). Also, besides song MP3 availability(namelink, thank you Kevin!), there is a poll at Buffy.com to have a soundtrack of the episode released on CD.

Well, I've now watched it, but I've seen the edited version (no UPN network here at school...). It seemed to work alright with the edited version.

'Course, I've also got a friend (NinjaRap) who taped the whole version, and whose tape I may borrow to copy later on.

Well because the show ran so long, any re-run you watch of it will be edited down for time.... So really the only chance you had to see the episode in its entirety was last tuesday.

I've already got FCP2. It's totally sweet, though it'll be nice to press what I've made to DVD. You know, don't you, that if you are a student, FCP2 is (or at least was) available for just $250.00...

Totally worth it.

Of course, I'm better at reviewing movies in haiku format than making them, so check out my site for the reviews!

It's probably the OS X. :) Nothing like a sweet

potent unixy goodness forming a low-fat yet
surprisingly rich and creamy layer underneath.
You realize that Windows is now the only OS
in the world that is NOT Unix?

While Tuesday's BTVS episode had entertainment value out the wazoo, I found the context somewhat contrived, though I did appreciate that ever cast member did his or her own singing, even when it wasn't professional-sounding, which I imagine was part of the point. Yes, Michelle Trachtenberg can dance. No, I didn't think it fit the plot very well. The way it was shot seemed to be saying, "Watch a girl with years of dance training show it off on a television program about demons and the people who kill them."

My biggest gripe was that way too many closed doors were opened. If you've seen it you know what I mean, if not I won't spoil it. I wish Whedon had found a more organic way to reveal these things.

*end rant*

I forget who the comedian is, but its from an old Comics Come Home sketch (for the Nealy Foundation). The guy is discussing shootings, at gas stations particularly.

There is always someone that gets interviewed that says, 'He was in the wrong place at the wrong time.' Really? Where do you go when your tank is on 'E'? Perhaps Mr. Jonny on the Spot with the uzi over there is in the wrong place.

It goes something like that, but overall its damn funny.

OS X is cool. I've only played with it a bit, but as soon as I can spring for the cool new 800MHz dual processor system w/ a DVD burner, I'm getting right on that action.

Kirkwood's a little far for my taste, but if you go to Heavenly, I'll make sure to get all my friends to say silly interesting things all day whenever we're up there. Plenty of site fodder.

Speaking of site fodder, I found myself hushing a friend as we walked by the Wall Berlin cafe the other day. "Shhh," I said, "'Eve' hangs out here a lot, and I'm not sure you want this to be on her site."

Glad things are looking up, Eve.

And I have to agree about Buffy last night, that was one of the coolest things I have ever seen. That is why they INVENTED television. It was so perfect, right down to the little monster singing the "Grr. Arg." at the end.

Watch out for bunnies! Why do they need such good eyesight anyway?

I say if you can count all the bad things that have happend to you, then you are in good shape as far as i figure it. But that all depends on what you consider a "bad" thing versus, say a "crappy day" type thing.

*Yay for Eve* that post made me smile, because school was getting me down and having to build the set for the play and be on running crew (which means I'm stuck at school nearly every night all night) while trying to write papers, study for upcoming exams, and try out for the squash team all at once was getting a bit much...but nothing bad has happened yet to count.

And even if I counted all the horrible things that could possible happen in the near future (messing up and ruining the whole production, failing any exam, not making the team...) they wouldn't even take up all my fingers so I'm thinkin I'm doing good here.
:)

Most of the bad things that happened to me weren't on my fingers. I had a bad thing happen to me on my toe, would that count?

My son has a scar he claims is from a bullet graze from when he was twelve, but I'm inclined to believe he just scraped up against something and is glamourizing it.
