"Sure there's seasonal attire out here; in winter, I wear heavier tee shirts."

Hi, there!

Yeah. The 6 Roman columns at Francis Quad. And the pair downtown.

Stephan Colleage only accepts women before.

Points to Candace for figuring out what my name means. ;o)

Yes, Candace, there are a number of us (or at least a few) from Missouri. Montygirl is also from St. Louis, if I'm not mistaken.

Passerby, you don't happen to attend Mizzou, do you? And umrguy, I just finally deciphered what your name means, I think. Took me long enough....I just never thought that anyone else on this site would be from MO! ha ha I lived in St. Louis until I moved to PA last fall. Anyway.....just had to notice that out loud. Or I guess just write it. Do what you've gotta do, right?

It's not about machismo, at least not for me. It's about genetics (higher mass at for a given surface area), a Boy Scouts weekend spent camping in the snow where it was so cold we had to sleep with our stoves and the next day's clothes inside the sleeping bag, and the old mental toughness: an ability to say, "this just isn't happening. I'm fine."

I recall that it dipped to -20 deg F once, about 9-10 years back due to wind chill, and in summer it reaches over 100. Spring comes along with hurricanes.
I got confused sometimes, not being local; when cold weather was announced, I grabbed my umbrella, expecting rain.

Well, Passerby, part of that is simply the weather here in MO - it's just weird. Last winter, for example, I was wearing shorts well into September/October, and jeans and a t-shirt well into December before it finally got cold.

Reminds me of a guy in my Physics and Engr. classes whilst in Columbia, MO. Either winter or fall, his standard uniform consisted of T-shirt and khaki shorts, sometimes with army jacket. Carried a loaded army knapsack on his mountain bike.
Nothing to do with season or fashion trend. It's all about being macho, I think.

I feel your pain, Mike. I spent my freshman year of college in Idaho (I'm from Orange County, CA) and actually had to start wearing jeans on a daily basis during the winter. The weird thing was, I must just be temperature-adaptive or something, because when the weather warmed up (to about 30) after the snow fell, I was comfortable walking around in jeans and a turtleneck.

People are confused about winter attire here in Georgia, too. Yesterday, I counted four people wearing gloves. It was sixty degrees. SIXTY.
And of course, I get the inevitable stares when I go out wearing a T-shirt in sixty degree weather, or a sweatshirt when the temperature is in the upper forties. Further north, you would be hard-pressed to spot an adult-sized snowmobile suit, even in the coldest temperatures; I've seen three so far this winter, and ALL of them were being worn in above-freezing temps.
They can't handle the heat, either-- they just crank up the air conditioning and drive everywhere.
I find myself actually missing the occasional snowstorm, among other things. (sigh) Two more years of this!
