"You know, Dad's not made of money."
--A very serious 5 year old, to her mother who was trying on footwear in the shoe department of Macy*s.

Huh, the unspoken lesson when I was growing up was that the mark of an adult is when you started paying for the meals, etc. After all, until you start to earn your own money you can't afford to buy your parents' meals, shopping trips, etc.

You know what's even sadder, when that 5year old grows up, she'll have to tell her mum, "You know, I'm not made of money."
As a veteran of many such child-funded shopping trips, it never fails to piss me off when people say, "Oh _you're_ paying for your mum! Wonder what she had to do to get that?"
Is it that hard to understand, that in this technologically advanced age, sometimes the young computer literate do have more money? And sometimes we're even nice to the elderly.

Oh, I'm sure that Mom said it to daughter, probably on multiple occasions. It is amazing what kids will come out with, though, My boss often brings in "Guess what my daughter's latest is.." stories.

One day the dad will repeat those same words to that five year old.
