Her: "I just wanna put a little behind my ears..."

Me: "Hey! Maybe the hives you have are from that perfume you've been wearing."

Her: "Well, I don't put it on behind my face."

... yes. This was a conversation that happened quite awhile ago, but I am pretty sure that we were running late for church youth group or something like that. I used to be a youth leader back before I moved to Texas, and she was (and remains) a junior leader (she's 11 years younger than me - no, to be grammatically correct, I believe it's "she's 11 years younger than I am young" ... I'm probably wrong. I'm often wrong.)

And hey, whatever you find funny is just fine with me ... I was starting to think I was boring that crap out of y'all.

That's a tricky one, Mori. Strictly speaking, "than I [am]" is correct. Several grammarians have stated that the colloquial "than me" is also correct to make it questionable. Depends on which grammarian you ask, I suppose.

See also discussions on "ain't".

One might rail against colloquial language, as the French have, or accept it to a certain degree. The entire Italian language started as a colloquial version of Vulgate Latin. That seems to have worked pretty well for them.

Of course, if you skip over the grammarians and ask a linguist, we'll say that as long as another native speaker of the language can hear it and not identify it as unsayable, it's totally fine.

And I'm pretty sure there are a ton of native English speakers who would not only cringe at "x years younger than me," but would actually say it themselves. Me, for starters. Especially since the version with no ellipsis and "proper" case marking is wildly clunky.

Not so smarty-pants

I felt so much smarter before I came in here. This is like playing online Jeopardy with my fiance'. I mean, I still love y'all but I wanna smack you with something at the same time. BUT, I can make a box of miniature donuts to 1:12 scale ... which I'm sure is not something every one of you can do. Though that doesn't comfort me, in the dark, while I smoke and mutter "ennui..."
