Shoe shopping
Posted by jcharles on Mon, 04/26/2004 - 8:18pm.
I'm back from China, much against my will. So I'm trying a new life, in a sense, trying to remember what life is like on this continent.

And I went shoe shopping today, with my mother. I'm entirely too tall to buy shoes in Southern China, so it was heavenly to walk into a shoe store and think "They have my size! They have a whole wall of shoes my size! Strappy shoes! Sandals! Women's shoes! So happy!"

I may have gotten a little drunk off the "new leather smell." We bought 4 pairs of shoes. I feel a little better about the whole "Welcome back to America" thing.

(For the Militant Grammarians in the crowd, should that be "4 pairs" or "4 pair"? Please answer quickly, and authoritatively. This is killing me.)

Believe it or not, I was thinking about this very question the other day. Is it pair or pairs? How many pair must one have in order to have pairs?

So today I looked it up, and confirmed what I pretty much knew: it's either.

Begs the question
Posted by Jon on Fri, 04/30/2004 - 9:55am.
That, of course, leads to the question: how would you pronounce the 'either', with a long e or long i.
Both are long, and we all know that size is relative. :)

Ah, just what I needed to make my birthday complete: lots of chocolate and a couple of men to torment.

I always did prefer to be the one handing out the birthday spankings...

i tried to tell you all that daen was much better as a dominatrix than i. witness our polarized responses to the tradition of birthday spanking.

HAP-py late birthday!

Seamed black stockings, excellent choice :D

Well... if you think of one of those English country manor sort of libraries with the dark wood panelling and the bookshelves up to the ceiling, quite well, actually. However, for the more contemporary library, the miniskirt, hair in a bun, glasses, and the demure yet enticing blouse (or well-fitting sweater) work much better. Either that, or the all-in-black ninja librarian look...

YMMV, of course.

Wow. Just.... wow. We haven't had lascivious conversation like this since the censor came to town. Bonus! Much needed!

However, it does induce a kind of Mike-inspired cowering in the corner, in an attempt to restrain one's self. Note that self-restraint is much different than the kind that can be applied by others.

Slightly-too-hot-for-the-library librarians included.

that just makes her walk much more seductive

I really shouldn't say this, because I don't want to insult I-girl. But, I just can't resist the opening:
Whether an extra 7 inches makes a woman's walk more seductive or not depends entirely on where the 7 inches are at...

Heh
Posted by steff on Fri, 05/07/2004 - 12:38pm.
which, in turn, will surely affect whether she can walk at all.

I've always pronounced it with a long I. Because my parents do. My mom has a degree in English and was a teacher for a while, plus I've been into British culture for quite a while.

For what it's worth, long E is the more conventional American pronunciation and long I is more British. Likewise gray and grey.

And according to the last edition of MLA I read, Americans should use toward, forward, and backward, while the British should use towards, forwards, and backwards. Dunno why.

I don't have the skill of a Matt or ParU, but I'll give it a shot:
4 pairs. 4 pair would be appropriate in poker. (What? I hardly even know her!)

But I guess I can sandal it.

</obligatory>

You're not supposed to put yourself in someone else's life until you've walked a mile in their shoes. Getting new ones sounds like rule-breaking. Is that what I want-- to be reborn a cheater?

Wearing used shoes is horrible too. Stranger's foot sweat= the sole reason I don't bowl.

(*waves away any questions about that last sentence*)

Such a heel!

You could bring your own bowling shoes... :)
