I saw an interesting item today that pointed out that Bush has been away from Washington DC for approximately 40% of his term so far. (at his ranch, at Camp David, on retreat, etc.) He's exceeded all his predecessors in vacation time. Maybe if he'd stayed on vacation 100% of the time, we'd be in a bit less of a mess than we are now?

My opinions are only a 45% match to Bush's. And he was the BEST MATCH to me! Howard Dean came in 2nd at 38% and Kerry only matchs 18%.

Reason and Politics go together? That's an interesting theory.

Another theory is anyone seeking political office is suspect because they either have some hidden [or not so hidden] agenda or don't understand the requirements of the job.

The good candidates get run off because of the character assasination they and their families have to go through from the professional candidates and the media.

And I don't believe in giving money to political parties or candidates, I think it should be illegal. My version of campaign finance reform would require all candidates have access to the same pool of money, outlaw mentioning other candidates in campaign ads, require participation in candidate debates at least every other week, submit a resume listing the community service and improvement projects the candidate has participated in, and require candidates to write essays in a monitored setting [to confirm they at least put the words on paper themselves] detailing what issues they view as important and how they plan to work through them.

And yes, I keep in touch with my "representatives" and I have the form letters to prove it. Unfortunately, most "representatives" come from a voting district designed to spit out a candidate of a particular demographic and keep the 2 party system chugging along, so they don't really represent who you think they do.

I keep hoping Ben Franklin will be reincarnated, but the odds are pretty slim. In the meantime, I'll just do what I can to help out in my own little community.

I totally agree that campaign contributions should be illegal and candidates should share a pool of money. Perhaps our public airwaves could air an equal number of ads from all qualifying candidates for no charge (after all, it's not like it happens all that often). That would cut down on the cost of running for office. Anyway, my cave person friend, we can keep hoping.

And when it comes to politics, I do participate by writing letters and voting and doing all that stuff. Last Saturday was the Bake Sale for Democracy, where there were bake sales all over the country with the proceeds going to help defeat Bush. My favorite name for one of the sales was the No-CARB (Cheney-Ashcroft-Rumsfeld-Bush) Bake Sale. Another good one was Hippies Against Hoodlums (HAH!) People are so funny.

I'm pretty sure they're talking about the private contributions--the checks sent in by individual people or groups who want to make sure their pony crosses the finish line first--rather than the govt funds available. Bush's campaign has a lot more funding than Kerry's (even though Kerry is actually the richer of the two...gotta love those rich heiresses), and thus can put a lot more smear into the smear campaign.

In fact, his wife, now former Senator Jean Carnahan, was the guest speaker at the commencement where I received my BS. (Can't say I paid much attention, I was fairly tired, although not as tired as last May when receiving my MS, when I was falling asleep during the speech because I'd been up all night attempting to pack to go home. And to be fair, you try delivering a speech on national/international television to 290 million+ viewers, see if that doesn't make you in the least bit nervous.

And for the record, I rarely watch speeches, whether I voted for the person or not.
