There's a theory that Franklin may not have been such a wise political sage as he seemed (I've heard that there are accounts that basically, he kept his mouth shut until an agreement was mostly reached, and then supported that agreement... although maybe that's politically wise, too. I dunno).

And as far as quotes go, here's a classic:
