Must not be a fan.

"Are you going to see Lord of the Rings tomorrow?"
"No. I don't like sci-fi movies."

I almost placed this under "Tragic" because even if she isn't a fan of the movies, this girl was old enough to have taken a literature class or two. Plus, with the hype around the movies for the last three years, she must have heard that elves, wizards and dwarves were involved somehow. Even my completely disinterested friend knows the difference between fantasy and science fiction.

It's interesting how people who don't read a particular genre of literature tend to lump it with other genres, willy-nilly. I've been known to do it myself, in regards to some non-fiction types.
What's tricky about SF and Fantasy is that some authors deliberately try to mix the two, and the genres have a certain fanbase in common. (Of course, there are people who only read SF and not fantasy, or vice versa)

Well, maybe I'm a bit of a stickler about those genres. I'm a big fan of both and find them so incredibly different that it seems impossible to mix them up. I'll grant that you're right about some authors trying to mix the two, but even then, the characteristics themselves are quite distinct.

However, fiction is definitely my preference. I suppose that if I were pressed to sort non-fiction literature, I'd have a few problems too. I like to think I'd do a decent job though ;)
