The TV thread??
Posted by ParU on Thu, 10/23/2003 - 11:00am.
Well if this is the TV thread, I just thought I'd tell y'all that in deference to my daughter's wishes I just put down in my Nielsen 'diary' (yeah we're a Nielsen family this week) that we all watched Angel (though I didn't really watch it, had to look it up in the TV paper to find it). And I think I represent about 10,000 households so I figured I'd give it a boost for the 10,000 fans that're on In Passing.
And, of course, lots of baseball too! (*g*)

Huh
Posted by Saint on Thu, 10/23/2003 - 11:19am.
My aunt was a Nielsen family too, some years ago; I think she actually had a device hooked to the TV so she couldn't lie. So instead, she turned the TV to whatever shows her (adult, not living with her) kids watched, then turned the sound down while she did other things. Do any of the Nielsen families just watch what they want to watch, or do they all pretend to watch whatever their friends, family, and website buddies want?

Not that we're not appreciative, I just find it amusing.

Nielsens...
Posted by ParU on Thu, 10/23/2003 - 2:32pm.
Well I think they went away from those devices for just that reason, Saint. Besides the diaries have to be much cheaper. They gave me a munificent $5.00 (cash, up front) to do this.

Because, if you think about it, it's probably better to sample 10 houses with diaries for the 'cost' of one house with a device. And I don't know if everybody skews their data, but I did.

Wow
Posted by marinerd on Thu, 10/23/2003 - 3:40pm.
I've never met a Nielson family, or anyone who had ever met one. I almost had talked myself into thinking they were a myth. You do you have to sleep with to get that kind of power?

Of course if it was me, it would be all cable stuff - sports, history channel, bravo, etc. Network stuff makes me queasy, mostly. My only don't miss show right now (excepting the WS) is Queer Eye.

I can't imagine anyone NOT scewing their data!

Well marinerd...

you've 'met' me (so don't bitch about my apostrophes!). I haven't sent the thing in yet, got something worthwhile that needs a boost? (I'm supposed to send it in today, so this is a time sensitive offer).

I must be on somebody's list, cause about 3 months ago I did Arbitron's ratings thing for radio stations.

Or maybe they're just recognizing my all powerful status??

You mean the Liquor In The Front, Polka In The Rear boxed set? Yeah, I hear that's the #2 DVD set behind Indiana Jones right now.
And for a moment of relative embarassment, my mom went to a taping of the show as a kid and got invited up on stage to dance with Lawrence. Of course, she was dragged there by her mom.

Several things
Posted by Intelligirly on Wed, 10/22/2003 - 1:10pm.
Yesterday I was shopping in a converted Victorian mansion here in town. Converted into a very large selection of shops and such, that is. They've maintained the structure of the rooms, for the most part, so you can still see the housiness of it. Aaaanyway, I was up in the attic ballroom area and the instant I walked in I gasped, and said, out loud, "Now, THIS is an attic!" and then proceeded to have a running commentary with myself about how I'd like to find an apartment like this and isn't this perfect and look! a window, and I would put a little screen here, etc., etc.. There was no one else up there at the time, and I was mumbling a bit...I'm not sure if that makes it better or worse. Anyway, I thought of Steff and Joe. And now I'll think of Mike too.

Also, speaking of semi-psychotic things we do, I have a recommendation to make to all members of this site, especially the female version. Find a copy of "The Gift of Fear" by Gavin de Becker and read it. Seriously. It's fascinating and, I think, one book that every woman should read, though applicable to men, too. I picked it up on a very similar recommendation and I'm quite glad I did. In fact, if I can, I'm going to get a copy for all of my female friends. So, there ya go.

Oh, look, just two things, not several.

Being ignored ---> talking to yourself.
Posted by Mike on Wed, 10/22/2003 - 11:04am.
You'd be surprised how easily and quietly the change comes. Nobody ever listens to you anyway, so why wait for an oblivious audience?

Plus talking to yourself is a hard habit to break because you don't notice that you're doing it. Apparently, even you ignore you after a while.

Um, is anybody reading this? Bah, I don't really care.

Most people in Canada are south of the Icelandic border... and Alaska is not south of the Canadian border.

Caveat: This map suggests that Yukon, NW Territories and Nunavut are not south of Iceland: http://atlas.gc.ca/rasterimages/english/maps/reference/national/can_eng_links.pdf

My siblings and I were always threatened with pulling the car over.
I don't remember an occasion that this actually happened, but the fear of being spanked within an inch of my life, in front of traffic, was a powerful tool.
I don't think my mom would've actually done it, but we could get pretty loud in the backseat. Ahh, kids. This is why I have yet to reproduce.
That and the lack of mate thing. And stuff. Anyway.
