Hello to all the readers of the San Jose Mercury News! A columnist for that newspaper, Dennis Rockstroh, interviewed me last week and the article went into print today. It's also availible here, on the newspaper website.

Another unrelated news item, there's a new link on the sidebar, "Donate." I finally got around to making the long-discussed tip jar, so that if people like, they can help me offset the costs of hosting this site. Much more info about that if you follow the link.

I'll have to donate as soon as the holidays are over. I love this site to bits, and it's one of the few things that kept me going through a really bad break-up this past summer. I just spent all my money on Solstice presents, though...

Eve rocks the socks.

Actually, if you have a Visa-backed check card, you can use that number the same way you'd use a credit card, as long as you don't go over the pre-set daily limit from your bank, which is usually $300.

The article also seems to have gotten you noticed at Metafilter.
...Um, again. (*waves to Su*)

I guess I'll have to apply for a credit card now.

The other thing about Amazon is they have a $50 cut off for individual donations, so I had to do $50 twice.

I like the anonymity bit of it actually, this way spreads the gratitude around the whole IP community, which is cool since I know people here would give if they were able, and I'm just lucky to be in a position to help.

I'm going to donate, but it will have to be next month, when(fingers crossed) my car-repair financial woes will be mitigated.

While I understand the problems with Amazon's donation system, I've done business with them before and they haven't (blatantly) screwed me over yet. PayPal is an unknown quantity to me. If I used eBay I'd probably be a bigger fan of PP.

I took the amazon deduction into consideration and gave 27.50, which should translate to about a month's worth of IP hosting. It's not much, but alas I too am a starving student like Eve.

YES! Eve! You kick ass! You were mentioned in Romenesko's obscure store and reading room! (http://www.obscurestore.com)! They mention all the weird news in that site! Your story is on the same page as the 11 year old boy who was being punished for skipping out on jury duty and the interview with Ron Jeremy!

Isn't that great! I love both of the sites and now they're mysteriously connected! WHOO HOO!!!!! YAY!

Thank you, Bashful, for mentioning here that you were the one of the two $50 donations. The only problem with Amazon (besides their higher cut) is that contributors have to specifically opt to let me know who they are, and thus I don't get the chance to email them a personal thank you unless they think to click the "Send info" button.

Match your $100. Shame I did it through Amazon before someone posted about their commission rates. :(

One thing I love about geek culture is the 'utilitarian' view of money as something that is valued for its usefulness at making things happen, not for itself, so I get the feeling Eve will do better than she expects.

Donate: all the cool kids are doing it. I just laid out $100, and everyone should consider that a challenge. I ain't exactly rich, but this is worth the money. Come on, this site lightens up your day, and if everyone who visits would donate just a buck, Eve wouldn't have to stress so much. Thank you for your time, and now back to your regularly scheduled comments.

Just remember folks, if you donate through Amazon, they charge Eve %15 + $0.15 per transaction. So your $1 donation is really just $0.70

Cool. I used to work for the Merc, and I didn't really know him but I know who Rockstroh is. Very nice writeup. I love your site, Eve. Don't stop.

Wow.... you're a celebrity. Can I have your autograph Eve?

Actually, thats pretty cool having a column written about you. My closest brush to fame was with one of my students I taught last year. She was the one who developed the pictures of the guy who was going to shoot up De Anza college. Anyways, a news crew came and shot video of her taking notes in class, and hooked up a mic on me to catch the lecture in case I said anything interesting they wanted to use in their show. They didn't use anything.
