"Hrmm... it's not high on my list."
"Yeah. It's kinda... it's kind of the Las Vegas of the Caribbean... Only it's kind of sad. It's the Reno of the Caribbean."

Books!

Present for steff:

goodreads.com

I thought this might be spam when I got an invite from a friend, but it's actually pretty nifty. If there's a limit to the number of books you can enter, it's not obvious. You should be able to find me with my CITYbagel email address.

Grad school has swallowed me whole... and spit me out in Southern California for the summer. It's not the Caribbean, but at least it's not Reno.
Just wait

I can't afford to go to the Caribbean. I think I'll just wait a few years until global warming makes Washington state several degrees warmer. It's just a few hours drive from Seattle to the ocean beaches, and we're on course for hot & sunny, instead of gray & chilly (which I actually kind of like). Oh well...

Weird Californians going to the Caribbean

Most the time we go to Mexico or Hawai'i for our tropical vacations the Caribbean is just to far most the time.

I wonder which island they were talking about? My parents just got back from a Caribbean cruise.

Guessing

Haiti is pretty sad... but I don't think anyone would compare it to Las Vegas. Maybe they mean one of the big tourist places, like Nassau, only it's not nearly glitzy enough for them.

Grad school has swallowed me whole.

Yes, but come on, it's the Caribbean. Even the Reno of the Caribbean would be worth visiting.

Especially in midwinter.

Yes, but keep in mind, you're in the Great White North. Different perspective than, say, the average Californian, spoiled as we are with fantastic weather (today it's 58 and sunny, for instance).

I couldn't care less about visiting the Caribbean.

Right now I'm in Virginia, actually, and it's sunny and 65F.

But you're right - mid-January, I'd go practically anywhere warm.

I'm normally not really a beachy sort of person, but right now, I'd take a trip even to the Reno of the Caribbean. Last week it was 80F here, and this morning it's snowing.
