Hum it? I'll sing you the whole thing, including being my own backup singers. (Drat! Cebu beat me to it!) Iiiiiii can go ANYwheeeere-- Friends to know, and ways to grow, a Reading Rainbow. (reading rainbow) A Reading RainBOOOWWW (Reading RAINbooooww). Dude, I'd still watch that if I knew the times. I watched it while Cebu lived with me after graduating college. This may be why she knows the song.

What? She made me watch freakin' Teletubbies. For which I may never forgive her. Creepy horrible satan baby sun.

"Cooontact! Let's make coooonTACT. 3! 2! 1! contact!" With the Bloodhound Gang!! yay.

I'll be done now.

I love Mike!
The other option would be pretty cool too.

Sea Monkeys 2.0!

I can't help but wonder exactly who trained him to "think that way."

My wife's friend has a pair of cats that each have 7 digits on the front paws. The extra two are in a thumb position. Aside from making the paws freakishly huge, they seem to be somewhat useful for letting Buddy and Overhill pry the lid off the bucket their food is kept in. It's a pity that they're fixed; cat evolution could have been on the fast track...

Note: I'm aware that the possession of extra toes is supposed to be non-hereditary. I'm also aware that Buddy and Overhill were both fathered by Kingfish, and he also had 7 toes on each front paw. *shrug*

Polydactyly
Posted by Desert Fox on Thu, 04/08/2004 - 3:35pm.
Actually, polydactyly in cats *is* hereditary, and the gene for the trait is even a dominant one. Which is probably why it's so common -- sort of like near-sightedness in humans.

I have a mutant cat, myself -- a bob-tailed one. Her lack of tail and her chubbiness have led me to nickname her "Basketball Cat". She also plays fetch, but I'm pretty sure that's not genetic.

Cheers

I'll be damned. Our local vet claimed it wasn't hereditary. Of course, that info comes second-hand, through my wife's friend, so hopefully she just misunderstood--I'd hate to think our vet was that incompetant. The other two cats they have with the same father (different litter, though) don't have the extras.

Cool link, by the way. Informative, and the photos are oh so cute.

I'm not sure there is a way. You can edit it, so as to say something else (which is what I'm guessing you did here), but you can't get rid of it.

But it apparently did enter mine.
Dolphin Thumbs
Posted by Jon on Thu, 04/08/2004 - 7:32am.
Besides being another great bad name...
There's a great short story about sessile (not-moving) creatures by Larry Niven, in which a device is created that serves this purpose. In fact, it's mentioned specifically near the end that it's very popular with dolphins for undersea exploration. (Of course, in Larry Niven's universe, dolphins get recognition as citizens.)
Posted by slugbuggy on Thu, 04/08/2004 - 6:18am.
Folly, sheer folly. It'd be the end of us all.

Then again, maybe you'd just end up with finned monkeys, making it that much harder for them to engage in all that poo-flinging business which plagues zoo visitors. So there's that angle, which Mr. "where I went to college, we had regular discussions on interspecies miscegenation" also failed to consider.

Matt - you're going to devalue the whole 'cool pts' franchise -- besides you know you have to have the proviso that people whose usernames are 'fruits' can't compete.
So here's a dolphin question - what's the name of the 'most famous' dolphin (had his own TV show) and what was his 'signature' trick? - 1 cool pt
And Apple is ineligible!!!

you gotta be kidding. this does NOT count for cool points. i mean... flipper?? sheesh. *grin*

besides, i knew all the other ones. apple's just been lying in wait again. we all know i'll just give her any cool points i get anyhow, as i don't have a froot bat of my own and the hedgehogs are still hanging out at sluggy's, eating all his snack food and watching mtv.

Hey!
Posted by Inuki on Mon, 04/26/2004 - 7:33am.
I'm one of those "young whippersnappers," and I remember Flipper! I also remember all sorts of other odd stuff, like David the Gnome, Captain Planet, Square One, and 3-2-1 Contact. (I used to have a bright red 3-2-1 Contact hat, even.) And my family watches MASH reruns and occasionally I Dream of Jeannie.

There wasn't much to do in my house if I was home sick as a kid, so I watched TV. Mostly because I usually couldn't focus well enough to read, and because I kept falling asleep.

I'm pretty sure I still have a 3-2-1 Contact! hat somewhere at home, although I think mine might be blue (or orange, I don't remember which).

Butterfly in the skyyyyyyyy... I can fly twice as highhhhh...

...take a look... it's in a book... a reading rainbow. etc etc

In elementary school we used to walk to the nearby library and watch episodes of that. Not with a VCR, with a projector. ooh ahhh.

My brother liked 3-2-1 Contact, I myself was always a Sesame Street girl.

Posted by Matt on Tue, 04/27/2004 - 8:37am.
I liked 3 2 1 Contact. I kept waiting for Spiderman to come on! Yay Spiderman!

And the great 60s humorist (and current mathematics professor at the University of California, Santa Cruz) Tom Lehrer did the L-Y and Silent E songs for that show. Very cool.

Tom Lehrer is still alive???

He did an absolutely spectacular Periodic Table song, that all chemists, indeed all who value the physical existence of matter, should listen to.
2 cool pts to anyone who comes up with it.

Like anybody expected somebody else to come forward with the song. Although, it really isn't the best of copies.

And you didn't exclude me!! *grin*

In my neck of the woods (Chicagoland), Reading Rainbow is on in the wee hours of the morning. However, that's where being the family babysitter comes in handy, 'cause I'm always awake at that hour! My oldest nephew and my niece love that show, and Levar Burton has sight!! *grin* Also Rubbadubbers which scare me a little. Well, Finbar (the mighty scary shark arr, arr, arr) rocks.

I've never seen 3 2 1 Contact. But I remember Spider-Man was a fairly frequent visitor to The Electric Company. Then again, Spider-Man appeared in a lot of things in that era that he probably regretted later (the horrible movies of the time come to mind, for instance).

Posted by Matt on Tue, 04/27/2004 - 10:53pm.
Dammit! You're right, Saint. My bad. All my references were for The Electric Company.

And I've got a copy of The Periodic Table too. Doesn't everyone?

Not the hedgehog thing - that was beyond disturbing. But the badgers were great. Aragorn bopping to the badger-vibe made me laugh out loud.

Nice try at getting more stuff stuck in my head, but ever since the badger-mushroom song was posted, my computer (most likely in self defense) claims it cannot find the server for weebls-stuff.com.

Speaking of LoTR, though: One of the headlines that's popping up on my MSN sidebar is "Aid workers find ring of destruction in N. Korea", and while I realize this is not a laughing matter, all I can think of is a little gold ring being lifted out of the rubble....

Aw, come on, Eve! Friends of mine and I (used to) talk like that all the time when we're sober!

Then we grew up.

But yeah, that magic window between about 3 and 6 beers can be an awfully... mind expanding place to be. After 6 or so, the torpor begins to set in.
