"Hey, d'you think she's going to ask us anything about the Salman Rushdie affair? What is that all about anyway?"
"I have no idea..."
"Ok, if she does, I'll just punt and say it was the working title for that movie with Pierce Brosnan and Rene Russo."

It made me think of a comic in MAD Magazine, where it shows Rushdie in his living room, clutching a copy of his Satanic Verses, and someone throwing a brick through his window.....

this story conjured images for me of a bunch of islamic fundamentalists with sniper rifles standing around in a museum, looking utterly perplexed as twenty or so short, bald men walk around holding copies of "the satanic verses" wearing bowler hats 8^) i love this site!

No, no, no. "The Salman Rushdie Affair" was the working title for the original (1968) version of "The Thomas Crown Affair" [http://us.imdb.com/Details?0063688] starring Steve McQueen and Faye Dunaway.

KM--
I wish you had left a real email or url with your post instead of the obviously fake ones, so that I could contact you and find out exactly what it is you dislike about my site. 'Hate' is a strong word in my book, so I'd like to know what about In Passing offended you so much.

Obviously we share different opinions about the site but I thought I'd try to explain the one issue you mentioned, that the page was 'rude.' There are some people who feel that listening to other people's conversations is impolite. However, I would never _try_ to evesdrop on a whispered conversation, or one that people were trying to keep others from hearing -- the bits I post here are things said, often quite loudly, in public places.

Furthermore I change all of the names involved, (even the ones I see written on bathroom walls,) in an attempt at protecting the privacy of the overheard. I believe if anyone ever contacted me and said, 'You quoted me, take it down,' I would.
If you think that occasionally poking fun at the overheard is unkind, bear in mind that I try to keep it in good nature.

Personally, I'm of the belief that one of the worst things in the world is taking yourself so damn seriously that you can't laugh at yourself -- and I think you'll notice that I occasionally make fun of myself as well. It's a really absurd existence we lead sometimes, and I just try to stay aware of that.

You may see it as rude, but what I'm really trying to do here is chronicle the world around me -- and the people around me, whether I know them or not, definitely affect the world I know.

I hope this has cleared up somewhat my views and ideas behind this website, and if you have any more opinions to share, feel free to mail me.
Thanks.
