"It's just bad phrasing, if nothing else."
"Yeah, I agree, there are definitely more better ways to say that. Wait, I was going to say 'eloquent.'"

Hah! I finally found out where I wrote it all down. Okay, horoscopes and junk: my rising sign is Gemini, sun sign is Taurus, and moon sign is Cancer. The sun I already mentioned with my Chinese sign.

I like filling in the little questionnaires. It is a hobby of mine. You may think I am kidding, but I swear on my word of honor that it is nothing for me to sit in front of a computer for hours on end and fill in the blanks. Weird, I know, but very enjoyable. Not stimulating, but entertaining for me. Simple minds, and all that. Okay. I think I should go finish my book.

marinerd - yeah but there's a bunch of things that could be considered 'inviting debate' that 'respectable' scientists find as anaethma. Part of the 'blame' has to go to who ever published it and the peer reviewers.

I didn't read the original article, and I don't believe in astrology. I do remember that the author himself never stated he believed in astrology either! He was inviting debate, and all he got was abuse.

That was what seemed petty to me.

marinerd - I understand the scientific community's reaction. Given the 'mystique' that astrology holds (witness this thread), even raising the appearance of it being respectable/scientific is anethema to anyone with scientific training.

And I've seen 'association' data that show a perfect parallel between smoking increases since 1900 and today and life expectancy increases. Just cause the lines go up in parallel, doesn't mean there's a cause and effect. But many people don't understand that.

I read once about a scientist who thought he'd found a correlation between a person's rising sign and his/her later personality in life. He published a paper on it. He was then so vilified by his peers it was astounding. They were furious that a reputable scientist would DARE to even mention the word astrology in a paper!

All he did was put out a hypothesis, to invite speculation. They treated him like the second coming of Hitler.

It was a few years ago, and I can't remember his name. Even scientists can be petty.

So compelling, I had to virtually marry you!
(It had been a few days since I threw out that reference.)
I once had what sign was "rising" for me explained, based on the time of day that I was born. It made sense at the time, but I had a very persuasive person telling me about it.

And I'm an Aquarius. Which produces some very weird results.

apple, in one of the miriad microdreams i had while i was sleeping for 9 minutes at a time this morning, you were complaining about something to do with your chinese horoscope. i gave you a hug and told you that you were unique... just like the rest of us. you were FAR more amused by that than i thought you should be, but i was just happy to have cheered you up, even if you misconstrued it.

because, really, i think you're FAR more unique than the rest of us. =D

I'm an Aries Rabbit. Somehow that doesn't compute. And I'm not particularly well-dressed, nor am I a natural leader. I do have a funky sense of humor with those I'm comfortable with, though. And I think I'd be more artistic if I could afford to buy decorations!

The best part of the whole horoscope thing is the word 'Zodiac'. I love that word.

Oh, and I just bought a very old tin fan with stamped into the side.

No insult taken for "guessing high." I was born in a Rat year (my sister gave me a year of the rat pendant, which I love), which makes me 31.
Somewhere or other there's a thread that went into a Zodiac/Chinese zodiac direction, so I know I'm not the only one from year of the Rat, but I'll let people 'fess up if they so choose. (Some people are so sensitive about their ages. *g*)

Happy belated birthday, daen. -cheery grin- If yours was on the third, it was the same day as my mother's (and five days after mine). And, if you had been twenty-one, we would now be the same age. I would say you are no more than twenty-seven years old (pardon any insult in guessing so high). My mami, on the other hand, is...uh, let me see...forty-nine. You know automatically when you meet her that she was the baby of her family, as was my father. I have children for parents. Fun, but annoying at times.

Anyway, happy belated birthday! (And just so you know, I'm performing a whole birthday kick routine for you.) I'm glad your open house went well. :)

The party went very well, thank you, and I got an embarrassing number of gifts-- not that I'm going to give them back or anything, but this wasn't supposed to be a loot grab; it was just a chance to show off the house. You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.

And defining "scary" in this instance would require much more thought than I'm prepared to give it at this point.
In about two and half hours, people will start arriving for my open house/housewarming thingie. Some of them will even know it's my birthday, too.
So of course I'm procrastinating on the prep work and posting instead. Beats stressing out and panicking, both of which I do far too well.

I think that because of the acceleration of technological advancement (grammer we don't need no stinking grammer), we are now permanently living in interesting times. Which makes life interesting in a good way if you can accept it and accept that nothing is perfect or will stay the same.

And since I'm in the middle of reading Interesting Times all I have to add to that is "Can I have them mashed?"

If he's scarier, I think I'll skip the experience.
If you are... well, the fact that I don't find you nearly as scary as I used to is, in itself, scary...
