Your car may be on fire

The heat comes from the oxidation process, every such process generates heat. Or in other words, oxidation is a really slow version of things being on fire. Hence, if the surface of the thing oxdating is big enough, enough heat is generated for you to actually feel the heat generated in the oxidation process.
