Yes I've been, and yes, it's nasty. Like many, many other places in the Central Valley.

Bizarrely enough, a friend recently emailed me a newspaper article which was, I think, from the New York Times travel section. It was called "36 Hours in Bakersfield", and it was basically a tourist guide to Bakersfield. Very, very strange. I still haven't decided whether or not it was a joke on the reporter's part.
