For a second there, I don't know why, I read "twenty-three years" as "twenty-three minutes". So I was a mite confused, both about why the old woman would miss where she came from already, and why the old woman would already consider herself a cowboy.

Ease up, Paul. Maybe the old lady and her family are big football fans and wear blue and silver on as many occasions as possible. Or, if they went into ranching after they got here, they really might be cowboys. Or maybe they just like showing their enthusiasm for living there. Unless Eve tells us she was using an exaggerated and phony Tex accent, we should give her the benefit of the doubt.
