I'm not sure it's scarier than U Rochester, but while I was in college in Poughkeepsie (please, no French Connection quote, I've heard it), I heard that the Hudson was something like in the top 3rd in the US for highest carcinogen concentration in riverwater.
I had a water filter for the tap water, but still felt like I was drinking liquid death. :\
