I just re-read that comment and it reminded me of the very difficult time I had trying to buy a camera film in Singapore one day. It was due partly to my accent and partly to my pronunciation.
After a number of difficult and failed attempts at "May I please have a film," a few hand gestures and one more effort resulted in a light dawned upon the young serving girls face as she said, "Ohhhhhhhh you want a filem, taking great pains to make clear to me the correct pronunciation of filem."
Oh what fun we had ...
