I used to have a friend who had her cat shaved every summer, since it was a long-hair and she didn't have hours upon hours to brush weeds and burrs out of its coat. It was a funny sight, to be sure. I don't think you'd want to do the actual shaving yourself--some things are just best left to professionals.
